I’ve seen variety of knots for castanets (2 loops, one loop, loops around Right end of the cord, loops around Left end of the cord). This is how a matriarch at a flamenco shop in Sevilla tied the knots for my castanets. She played them very well too!
Thread the cord through openings at the top of the castanets. The Right end of the cord should be shorter than the Left
Wrap the Left end of the cord around the Right end of the cord two times
You will have two loops formed around the Right end of the cord
Insert the end of the Left cord between the two loops
Pull through and tighten
Voila!
You will use the Left end of the cord to tighten the knot
And Right end of the cord to loosen the knot
